My Little Holiday Spirit

Roni Delmonico

For the last several years we have spent Thanksgiving at the Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World.  It is my favorite time to visit and the villas are decorated just beautifully during this time of year.  We were not able to get there this year and I have been a bit sad about that.  It's always been our way of ringing in the holiday season in a way that lifts my spirits and makes me smile.

There is a lovely warm space at the Wilderness Lodge, called the Iron Spike Room.  It has a stone fireplace with comfy leather rocking chairs beside it, where I have wiled away many quiet moments reading while my children play games at the tables nearby.  It's a cozy place and probably one of my favorite places to be on property.  There's a great deal of Walt's spirit in that room and it's a good feeling just being there.

Not far from the Wilderness Lodge is Disney's incredible version of a campground known affectionately as "The Fort".  It's a very laid back place to be during the holidays so we always made time to visit and share a meal there.  I really think it would be fun to camp at Fort Wilderness during the holidays and maybe someday we'll actually do that.  You wouldn't believe how people decorate their campsites at Christmas time.  It's totally, outrageously amazing!

My son, Sean is just a little bundle of joy this morning.:)  He loves Thanksgiving and Christmas and everything to do with the holidays, from the decorating, to the baking, to the eating and sharing and all the beautiful traditions we've carried on over the years.  I like to think I had a little something to do with that, and while we were not able to continue our tradition of a Walt Disney World vacation to kick off the holiday season this year, we are all together, healthy and happy. His spirit lifts mine always and I will carry that in my heart today as I begin preparing our Thanksgiving meal and decorating the house.  The picture above was taken on one of our trips to The Polynesian Resort across from the Magic Kingdom.  It was such a relaxed, warm day, laying together in a hammock, looking out over the castle. Feels pretty much like that at home today, and after all...  isn't that what the holidays are all about?

His favorite Christmas song is Amy Grant's Winter Wonderland and I have a special affection for the song "Sleigh Ride".  I'm playing them as I write.  I wish all of you a very blessed and beautiful Thanksgiving, full of the warmth and light I see in my son's face today.

Word to the Wise:
"These wonderful things are the things we remember all through our lives."  Play a little Christmas music today.  Sean says it will be good for your spirit, and I tend to agree.
